20-or More Book Challenge Directions
The challenge is to read books from different genres throughout the year.
Students are asked to read 20-or more- novels of their choice.
Students will be given a grid to keep track of the books they read and Book Review Cards.
They should read at least one book from each category/genre across the bottom of the grid before
going on to another genre. After they read each book, they must do three things to receive credit:
I would like your child to read at a level that will be a challenge. The book should not be too easy or too hard. The new reading guidelines for 4th grade are in the Lexile level of 770-980. Please choose your first book in this range. As we continue, we will have a better idea of your child’s reading level. You can easily find the Lexile level of any book here: http://www.lexile.com/
Your child is familiar with the website and can find a book on their level.
How to Find Books on Your Child’s Lexile Level
Lexile levels are scientifically and mathematically assigned based on the difficulty and readability of a book. Once you know your child’s Lexile level, you can search for books that match this level to expand your home library and encourage daily reading practice in your own home. Use the Lexile database to search by Lexile level, title, or subject to find books your child will enjoy and be able to read without becoming discouraged at his or her reading achievement.
If they have started to read a book not in this level, they may continue to read it for the first genre choice. The poetry and folktales genre may be difficult to find in their Lexile level. Feel free to choose an appropriate level.
I have a recommended book list posted on my website under the “More” tab. The books are recommended by The Center for Teaching and Learning.
